I remember watching Scott in third grade on the TV in class. It made me want to be an astronaut and while those lofty goals were never reached, such things gave me an interest in the sciences, engineering, and for practical reasons, toolmaking. This is a tool watch, very no-nonsense, accurate, and even with the titanium, still heavy on my wrist at first wear(compared to my Casio). If the meteorite dial matters to you, get it if you can justify the cost (all watches are jewelry now, supplanted by network time). If not, save yourself some bucks and get the plain dial. On to the dial, my only real criticism is in the lume. I didn’t know what I was expecting because dive watches always have much bigger indices and /should/ have bigger lume. So if you’re used to a “dive watch “ (nobody dives with watch- it’s a dive computer) , don’t expect the same. The etching on the dial for the meteorite face is excellent and whoever oriented the Widmanstätten pattern to the face was paying attention to detail. The crystals are proportionate and are oriented at 45degrees. Keep in mind the pattern is a natural one, so each one is unique as a snowflake. And while Speedmasters were on astronaut wrists for the most part, it was the electric Accutrons that lived inside spacecraft and unattended on the moon in instruments. So yes, the heritage goes beyond Scott’s watch. Functionally, a digital quartz or “Apple Watch “ is more useful. There isn’t even a lap time function or countdown timer. Then again it’s not about function. It’s skookum. It does what it says on the tin, and it’s not too big. While the supplied strap is comfortable , I ordered a (matte)Ti band sheerly for looks. Finding a quality titanium solid link watch band is nigh on impossible over here in the states, but if you order one from Germany, it will cost you DHL shipping. It’s a nice watch.
I received my new Lunar Pilot meteorite dial watch a week ago, it was purchased a couple months ago for me by my daughter in the US This watch was, at the time not yet available in Australia. After a rendezvous in Mexico for a family wedding a week ago I have not stopped marveling at the beauty of this watch. it is a very wearable size and I love the accuracy of this precisionist movement! The history behind the Bulova Lunar Pilot watches is incredible, I can only hope you’re onboard with the Artemis missions to return to the moon! We Bulova fans will be “Watching”.
Amazing watch, dial is spectacular. I can’t recommend this model enough.
